Char siu is a Cantonese–style barbecued pork marinated in a char siu sauce which is sweet and salty, with a hint of five spice flavour. This recipe uses char siu sauce, but smothered over tofu, which is then baked until golden brown and served with a delicious spring onion ginger sauce (姜葱酱) which is a favourite of mine and pairs perfectly well with char siu dishes.
The char siu tofu can be eaten as it is or served with rice, and we have also shared a simple vegetable fried rice here.

- 4 tbsp worth of finely chopped ginger

Fried vegetable brown rice
- 1.5 – 2 cups worth of pre-cooked rice (fried rice is best cooked when the rice is at least one day old)
- Large handful kale (roughly chopped with stems)
- 3/4 cup garden peas
- 3 garlic cloves (peeled + roughly chopped)
- 1-2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1-2 tbsp soy sauce or liquid aminos

Method
Char siu tofu
- Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F.
- Combine all the sauces and oil. Place the tofu in a baking dish, coat with the sauce.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes. Take out at the halfway mark and give the tofu a stir, bake for the remaining time and take out and leave to one side.
Spring onion/ Scallion ginger sauce
- Prepare the sauce by combining the scallions, ginger, salt in a bowl.
- Heat the oil in a pan, when it gets hot and is about to bubble, pour over the mixture and stir!
Fried vegetable brown rice
- Add the oil to a wok or large frying pan, fry the garlic for around 30 seconds then stir in the rice, break it down with the spatula and fry for a few minutes.
- Stir in the garden peas and kale, add the sesame oil, soy sauce/ liquid aminos and fry for a few more minutes before serving.
- Serve with the char siu tofu, topped with the sauce.
